Bernard Caillaud trained as a physicist and is a Doctor of Arts and Art Sciences. He worked as a painter and photographer from the 1960s until the 1980s. He began using computers in the mid 1980s and now composes numerical images either by programming or by using creative software. He prefers to present his
work in audio-visual form (including CD-ROM) or, in the context of an exhibition, in self-illuminated cabinets. Bernard Caillaud has exhibited extensively in Europe and in Canada and, for the first time, at Portsmouth.

He has had numerous articles published in both science and arts journals, including Leonardo (Journal of the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology). He works on Power Macintosh
