LISS or LYSS
A Celtic name, hypothetical British 'lisso-' or hypothetical Primitive Welsh 'lis' (Welsh 'llys')='palace, large estate, main place in a district' (cf Jackson 1953: 285). It is not known what administrative setup is referred to. The spelling in 'y' common into the 19th century, is now obsolete, but preserved in the name of 'Lyss Place'. The tithing 'Lisse Torney' reorded in 1586 represents a misdivision of hypothetical 'Liss Sturmy' from the family of the holder of part of the manor in 1323. Liss Abbots (1413 'Lysse Abbatisse') recalls that the nunnery of St Mary's, Winchester, held the manor before 1066 and subsequently.
