FRITHAM in Bramshaw
Probably contains hypothetical Old English 'fryhth(e)' from 'fyrhth(e)'='scrub on the edge of a forest' (Gelling 1984: 191-2). Possibly coincidentally, the site of the present village is heath surrounded pretty well on 3 sides by woodland. The second element may be 'hamm' in Dodgson's sense 5a - a cultivated plot in marginal land.
