DIBDEN, liberty
Old English 'Deopdenu'='deep valley', with voicing assimilation of 'p' to a following 'd'. The village is in a slight col between two areas over 30m high, and the name is a distinct surprise. There is a house which carries the Domesday Book spelling as its modern name.
