BARTLEY HEATH in Odiham
Hypothetical Old English 'Bierceleah'='birch wood' (it is about 1350 'Barkele boscus'). The heath, on Valley Gravel/Sand, is first documented in 1586. The form with '-t-' is purely modern, and is paralleled in the surname 'Burtenshaw' a variant of 'Birkinshaw'. Thus also Bartley (Grange and village) in Copythorne (1236 'Berkele' 1586 'Bartlie Regis').
