Flaking can produce an uneven surface, but differential rates of exposure can result in different rates of weathering which can include processes that change the colour of the surface. Iron staining, for example may alter surface colouration. Similarly, deposition of pollutants as well as migration of material through the rock can result in pronounced discolouration of the gravestone surface.
