Image 2 Flaking beginning on a gravestone surface. These are relatively large flakes developing at the edge of what appears to be a hardened outer layer. Such 'case-hardening' is fairly common on sandstone gravestones and may represent salt and moisture ingress or migration into the surface layer of the sandstone.
